Did you make New Year’s resolutions related to your health and are worried about being able to stick with it?
This morning we were joined by health and wellness expert Sonia Jhas with ideas on a morning routine and keeping those new habits.
“When you start your day off on the right foot, the whole day just runs in a very different direction,” said Jhas. “My first suggestion is as simple as writing it down.”
Jhas says journaling can seem like a really intense endeavor, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. She suggests taking five to ten minutes in the morning to write in a notebook to declutter your mind.
“We wake up in the morning with so much noise in our heads,” said Jhas. “If we could just sort of offload that first thing in the morning, it really helps you reorganize what you’re feeling and what you’re thinking and helps you take charge of the day.”
Jhas says some ideas of things to write about include pretty much everything and anything. She says the free-flow of writing helps, rather than worrying about a structure.
She also suggests breath work for gathering your thoughts and creating a good start to the day.
Hold in your breath for four counts, hold it for four counts, release the breath for four counts and lastly hold an empty breath for four counts.
“That rhythmic fashion of breathing in a repetitive nature really for me feels like a tangible and easy way to ground and realign and re-energize the body first thing in the morning,” said Jhas.
Jhas says treating yourself fairly is an important part of the morning. She says people tend to sacrifice their own nourishment in the morning because they are so busy with other things and other people.
“Fairness comes down to nourishing yourself well,” said Jhas. “One of my go to solutions is as simple as grabbing a morning drink, something as easy as drinkable yogurt.”
With these tips, Jhas says people can get a good start to their day which leads to a good start to the year.
