A Hamilton mountain community is shaken and detectives are searching for answers after a fire killed a man Monday night. Hamilton police and fire department say they arrived at the house on Gillard St. just before 9pm to find smoke billowing from the back of the house with a 47-year old man still inside.
Neighbours tell us that a man unrelated to the family ran to the home and tried to go back inside to save the man, but fire fighters told him that the smoke was too dangerous and to stay where he was. Fire fighters were able to contain the fire to one half of the semi-detatched home and managed to retrieve the man who later died. The family have asked that he not be identified.
Today the office of the Fire Marshall and the police forensics unit were inside the house in an attempt to figure out what caused the fatal fire. Officials didn’t comment on what they thought could have caused this fire, it’s understood that the home was equipped with working smoke detectors. Hamilton police are asking for any insight on the fire and urge people to contact them if they have information.
