Just before Christmas one local family is happy to be home for the holidays, but they didn’t have that home until today.
It took two years to build a house and now it has become a home.
“It makes it much easier, it’s game changer for us.”
Dragisa Arezina is a father of 6. Since moving from Croatia 17 years ago his family has been living in a small apartment.
At a dedication ceremony, his family was handed the keys to their new home built by Habitat for Humanity.
“It’s nice to have space. It’s nice to have comfort but really what changes, it’s accessibility of this house.”
Two of Dragisa’s sons, Tom and Mattia are special needs and a bedroom on the main floor comes equipped with lifts, and roll in showers. As they become adults it will allow them to live at home instead of having to move into long term care.
“We have the parents bedroom right next to the boys so at night if the boys have a need, the parents are right there to be close to them and take are of them.” said Sean Ferris, Director of Operations for Habitat for Humanity.
But as impressive as this build may be, what may be more impressive is the fact that every bit of work was volunteer.
The land, near the hamilton beachfront, was donated by the city, but it wasn’t just well wishers who stepped up to the plate.
“Many of the volunteers are pro’s who came out and we can’t do it without the pro’s.”
The group Women in law enforcement began the push for this home, and construction crews worked for free, with the result being piece of mind, in time for Christmas.
