Holiday season health fixes

First Published:

We all look forward to the holiday season but it can also be stressful.

Naturopathic doctor Joyce Johnson shared some tips on how to feel your best during the busy holidays.

Treating Heartburn

With indulgence of food also comes heartburn.  Our stomach can actually stretch to volume of one litre. If you eat a large meal your stomach stretches to its limit, which squeezes the organ against others.

Here are ways to treat or avoid heartburn

  • Eat smaller meals
  • Eat slowly
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat more vegetables and fruits so you feel full without the bloat

Treating Hangovers

With the holidays comes more parties and drinking, which then leads to a hangover the next day.

Here are ways to treat a hangover

  • Drink water inbetween alcoholic beverages
  • Eat a banana
  • Have a glass of coconut water
  • Skip the greasy food and eat walnuts instead
  • Rub lavender essential oils on your temples to treat a headache

Treating a sore throat

With all the stress and running around of the holidays people can get worn down and sick.  With Omicron spreading rapidly it is more important than ever to keep healthy, but if by chance you get a sore throat here are some natural remedies.

  • Eat garlic as it has immune boosting and anti-fungal properties
  • Gargle with salt water
  • Coat your throat with honey
  • Sleep with a humidifier
  • Eat Vitamin C rich foods

Whatever you do this holiday season, stay safe!
