The city of Hamilton says three hikers who were rescued at Albion Falls last week are now facing charges.

Emergency crews were called to the area around 9:30 p.m. last Wednesday after a trio became lost and ended up in an off-limits area. They contacted police after a woman in the group hurt her ankle.

After arriving on scene, a group of firefighters went to the north end, across from the falls while a second group went to the south end, where stairs down to the falls have been blocked off for safety.

One firefighter suffered multiple injuries after he lost his footing on the edge of a cliff and fell roughly six metres.

He was transported to Hamilton General Hospital with injuries to his face and head.

The city of Hamilton says the hikers were in a prohibited area contrary to city by-law.

They received a summons to appear in court where a penalty will be discussed.

This was the first rope rescue at Albion Falls in two years.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating the incident due to the firefighter’s injuries.
