Tips on healthier eating in the new year

First Published:

You don’t have to sacrifice great flavour to eat well. Chef, food expert, and cooking show host Bianca Osbourne showed us how easy it can be.

She recommends making a small change every single month. One change Osbourne recommends is trying a plant-based dish, like vegan cheese sauce.

Vegan Cheese Sauce

This recipe starts with sweet potatoes and white potatoes. Osbourne blends these potatoes with some oil and spices including garlic powder, onion powder and nutritional yeast which will give the sauce the cheese flavour.

Next, add vegan milk and apple cider vinegar. Blend all the ingredients together and serve.

Balancing Blood Sugar

Osbourne says a balanced blood sugar can be achieved with balanced meals. She says you should eat vegetables first, then a protein like eggs and lastly carbs. This order will ensure your blood sugar levels are not spiking.

As an example, Osbourne recommends cucumber as a vegetable, eggs as a protein and sour dough bread for the carbs. She says sourdough bread is the best to eat because it has less impact on glucose.

Blood sugar issues can have an effect on someone’s sleep. Osbourne says eating something like yogurt, berries and chia seeds right before bed will help you sleep all the way through the night.

Make friends with convenience products

Osbourne recommends buying products such as soup stock, jarred pesto, pancake mix and more. She adds additional spices and flavours to boost the health factor in each item.

“All of [these convenience products] help you make healthier choices and make healthier meals at home without having to do a ton of work,” said Osbourne.
