Harry’s Fish and Chips closing after 40 years

First Published:

A family-owned mom-and-pop eatery on east Hamilton mountain is saying goodbye after 40 years of serving its community. Harry’s Fish and Chips on Fennel Avenue East is closing its doors on Christmas Eve and will then go up for sale.

Owner Ivan Janssen says he’s shutting down his fryers and turning the page, “it’s unsustainable for me to keep up with the workload, with my kids at home, I want to pay attention to them, and try something different.”

Janssen’s parents Harry and Grace launched the restaurant back in the 1980s. He would like to thank the community for its support through good and bad times.

Janssen says other businesses in the same plaza as Harry’s Fish and Chips have changed hands over the pandemic. He hopes to see it flourish again with the same vision his family had.

“We thought 40 years was a good run, we’re ending on a good note, now we would like to pass it on to someone who appreciates the style of British fish and chips,” Janssen said.

Harry’s Fish and Chips will close up shop on Christmas Eve.
