A member of Stephen Harper’s backup band ‘Herringbone’ has been charged with sexual assault. Drummer Phillip Nolan faces five counts each of sexual assault, sexual exploitation and sexual interference with a minor.
We have more on the charges, and reaction from the Prime Minister’s Office. Phillip Nolan is a school teacher in Ottawa. He taught music at a public school, but he was suspended when charges were laid.
In this YouTube video taken in 2011, he talks about using technology in the classroom. The charges he faces stem from incidents dating back to 1998 and 2000, while he was teaching with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Police began investigating him in november of last year after a complaint of sexual assault on a minor.
Nolan plays drums in the band Herringbone. Stephen Harper often practises with the band, and occasionally plays gigs with them. A spokesperson for Harper’s office said he has known Nolan for quote “a number of years” and that he is shocked and disturbed by the charges.
The RCMP believe there could be more victims in the case. Harper’s office says they won’t make any more statements while it’s before the courts.
