Hamilton’s Emerald Lodge evacuated following numerous health and fire concerns

First Published:

Hamilton’s Emerald Lodge Residential Care Facility (RCF) has due to a “deteriorating situation”. The facility is owned by the same family that owns the Rosslyn Retirement Residence.

Approximately 35 residents were removed from the facility yesterday and temporarily moved to the former Cathedral Boys School at 378 Main St. E. “They came in at six o’clock at night with zero hours notice and booted us out into the rain,” one resident told CHCH News last night.

“Following the announcement that Emerald Lodge was in receivership, additional inspections of the Lodge were conducted this month by the City’s Licensing and Bylaw Services, Public Health Services and Fire Divisions,” the City of Hamilton stated in the release.

The Hamilton Fire Department completed a general inspection of the property on October 10th which resulted in Fire Code Orders to address maintenance and record keeping deficiencies. The following day, Public Health Services issued an order for pest infestation in a food storage area.

Other infractions include:

  • Provide each client with their own personal hygiene items
  • Provide separate, individual and labelled storage for personal hygiene items
  • Wash bedding weekly so that it is maintained in a clean and sanitary condition – or as often as necessary
  • Ensure hot water temperature does not exceed 49 degrees celcius (120 degrees fahrenheit)
  • Install a temperature regulating device on hot water system
  • Washrooms have adequate supplies and are maintained in a clean and sanitary condition

“Throughout the week the situation at Emerald Lodge has become increasingly untenable and unsafe for residents and staff,” stated the release. On October 21st, Licensing and Bylaw Services issued a notice to the operator that the license will not be renewed. It is set to expire on October 31st.

The City of Hamilton says they are working with service partners in the community to ensure the residents find long-term housing alternatives.
