Armed, barricaded person taken into custody: Hamilton police

Police say one person is in custody after they barricaded themselves with a knife in an apartment building unit in Hamilton’s east end Thursday afternoon.

Officers responded to a call regarding a person with a knife in the area of Melvin and Tolton avenues.

Investigators say there is no risk to public safety.

Melvin Avenue is closed between Tolton and Walter avenues.

There are reports of smoke coming from the two-storey apartment building. The Hamilton Fire Department is at the scene.
