Just when you thought you’d heard the word “election” for the last time residents on Hamilton Mountain could head back to the polls for a by-election. With Ward 7 City Councillor Scott Duvall’s win in Monday’s federal election there’s now a seat to fill at City Hall.
Ward 7 has been held by Scott Duvall for 9 years, but now after successfully running in Monday’s election the NDP MP elects seat will have to be filled by someone else.
Hamilton can either appoint a new councillor or hold a by-election. That would cost tax payers about 100 thousand dollars and Duvall says there isn’t a shortage of applicants interested in filling his shoes.
“There is numerous people that have approached me or told me they are interested and I believe it’s going to be quite large the amount of names that will be submitted.”
But Duvall wouldn’t share those names for confidentiality reasons. If council decides to hold a by election it won’t be until closer to the end of February or into March of 2016.
He plans to submit his resignation letter sooner rather than later which will get the ball rolling and he has some advice for his successor. “Work with the people. Roads, sidewalks parks are very important. Seniors are very important and be in touch with your residents.”
Scott Duvall hung onto the riding Monday which had been held for nearly 10 years by New Democrat Chris Charlton who did not seek re-election.
