Hamilton is making improvements to air purification systems across the city with $3.6 million funded through the federal government.
The financial support comes from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (COVID-19 Resilience stream).
The City says the goal is to improve air quality and reduce airborne and surface contaminants such as bacteria, pollutants and viruses.
Earlier this week, crews completed system upgrades at City Hall, Lister Block, Provincial Offences Administration (POA) office, and the Red Hill Family Centre in collaboration with CityLAB and participating students.
The CityLAB program has given Mohawk College students from the Engineering Technology program hands on experience.
The installation of in-duct air purification systems at Macassa Lodge and Wentworth Lodge took place earlier this year.
After the work is complete, the City says it will use the remaining money towards improvements at additional Hamilton facilities with a focus on areas with high occupancies and those that serve vulnerable populations.
It would also focus on places where activities take place that are at higher risk of infectious aerosol particle generation such as senior centres, recreation centres and arenas.
All improvements are set to be completed by December 2023.
