A man has been charged with arson following a fire at an apartment building in central Hamilton.

Hamilton firefighters responded to the blaze around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday.

Crews found a working fire on the third floor of the structure on Victoria Ave. South near Main St.

They also spotted a man calling for help inside the building.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze and were able to rescue the man. He was treated by paramedics on scene.

No other injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at roughly $110,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s (OFM) office has been called in to investigate.

Hamilton police say they’ve charged a 45-year-old man who lives in the building with arson and endangering life.

OFM investigators are also looking into a house fire on Campbell Ave. near Ottawa St. that happened on Sunday.

Officials say the blaze has been deemed suspicious because the home was vacant and all the utilities to the house were disconnected.

The fire appears to have started at the back of the home and spread through the walls into the attic.

Fire officials believe damage is estimated at $70,000.
