Hamilton city council is expected to discuss new ways to keep its roads safe as the annual collision report is presented to council Wednesday.

This comes one day after a cyclist was hit by a vehicle and killed on the Hamilton Mountain.

The city has seen over 20 collisions involving cyclists or pedestrians so far this year, 12 of which have been deadly.

This is the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the past five years.

Also this week, a 4-year-old boy was seriously injured Monday after being hit by a pickup truck in Hamilton’s North End.

City councillors have been discussing this issue for weeks now with proposals for more speed cameras, protected bike lanes and to convert Main St. into a two-way road instead of a one-way.

Main St. is one of Hamilton’s most dangerous roads.

The annual collision report for 2021 will be presented to council today, as well as new proposals that will guide future road construction and re-designs with features to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe.

The public works committee meeting will start at 1:30 p.m.
