Halton police have arrested 14 people after recovering stolen luxury goods

First Published:

Halton police have arrested 14 people they say are a part of an organized crime ring responsible for stealing nearly $3 million worth of high end merchandise from homes. All 14 thieves are from Chile and will face deportation.

Jewellery ranging from $20 000 rings to $45 000 Cartier watches. “There was one purse that weighed approximately 40 pounds and it was filled with watches.” And the purses are high fashion, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Prada.

Investigators say the 14 criminals, foreign nationals, targeted over 100 homes across the GTA, at least 70 in Halton and 44 in Oakville.

“Knocking on front doors, waiting several minutes to confirm the home was vacant and then either smashing the rear doors or prying open the rear doors.”

Only spending 3 to 6 minutes inside but the thieves were caught on camera.

14 people from Chile were identified, men and women ranging from 19 to 57 years old. They are facing a combined 69 charges. There will be an immigration hold on all of them while they face their criminal trial here.

Canada Border Services agency says they are now trying to determine how these 14 people, some with criminal backgrounds in their home country of Chile, managed to enter Canada. It’s unclear when they arrived in the GTA. Halton police believe the break-ins began late last year.

“This cleared more than half of our break-ins that we have had so far this year in Halton. 52 or 57% of the ones in Oakville.” Chief Stephen Tanner.

Next is a long process to get the stolen property back to the rightful owners. Halton police say they will post all of the stolen pieces online later this week for identification.
