The Montreal Canadiens have fired General Manager Pierre Gauthier.
Gauthier was promoted to the role of executive vice president and GM in February 2010 after Bob Gainey stepped down.
He originally joined the Habs organization as Director of Pro Scouting back in 2003.
Montreal finished sixth in the East during his first full season as GM but were eliminated in seven games by the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in the first round.
The team is currently last in the Eastern Conference with a 29-34-14 record.
Montreal fired Head Coach Jacques Martin in December and appointed Randy Cunneyworth as interim head coach by Gauthier in a controversial move due to Cunneyworth’s inability to speak French.
Bob Gainey, who preceded Gauthier as G.M., has also been relieved from his advisory role.
Serge Savard has been brought in to advise owner Geoff Molson in finding a replacement G.M.
