Hamilton police have launched an investigation after gunshots were fired early this morning in the downtown core.

Police were canvassing the area of West Avenue North between Cannon and Barton Streets today.

They were going door-to-door asking residents in the area what they may have heard or saw.

Police were called to the area around 1:30 a.m. for reports of a shooting.

Several spent bullet casings were found but police are not aware of any injuries and do not have any suspects.

The motive for the shooting is now being investigated.
