The Yates Cup featured Guelph at Western, a game you saw on CHCH.

Scoreless in the first quarter when Stevenson Bone, in for the injured Will Finch, hands it off to Alex Taylor for a 23-yard gain to propel Western into the red zone.

On the next play, Bone, son of former Mustangs quarterback and Hec Crighton winner Jamie Bone, follows his blocking and goes in for the touchdown. 7-0 Mustangs.

Second quarter, James Roberts to A’dre Fraser for a 15 yard gain. It would lead to a Gryphons field goal and they are on the board, a 7-3 game.

On the next drive however, after moving the chains, Steveson Bone punches his own ticket. 14-3 Western at the half.

Third quarter, Brandon Gordon goes 24 yards, down to the one. Two plays later, James Roberts calls his own number and it’s 14-10 Western.

Late third quarter with the score 17-10 now, the James Roberts pass is complete to Johnny Augustine for 21 yards.

On the same drive, early in the 4th, Roberts to Jacob Scarfone for 36 yards and a touchdown as Guelph ties it up.

More Guelph with under 10 minutes to go in the 4th, it’s Roberts to Scarfone again, this time for 28 yards.

They would score the field goal and take the lead.

The final drive of the game, 23-17 Guelph with 5 seconds left in the game, from the 10 yard line,
Justin Sanvido is stopped short of the goal line.

Game over! A big upset for the Gryphons. They defeat the Western Mustangs 23-17. It’s their first Yates Cup in 19 years!

It was not the only upset of the weekend in CIS football. Only the defending Vanier Cup champion Montreal Carabins earned a return trip to the national semifinals.

In the RSEQ Dunsmore Cup, Montreal edged Laval 18-16; in the Canada West Hardy Cup at Calgary, the UBC Thunderbirds scored a 34-26 upset against the previously unbeaten Dinos; and in the AUS Loney Bowl, the St. Francis Xavier X-Men defeated Mount Allison 14-12.

The top-three ranked teams in the country are now out of contention for the Vanier Cup.

Next Saturday, fourth-ranked Montreal (8-2) visits No. 5 Guelph (9-1) in the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Mitchell Bowl at Alumni Stadium, while No. 6 UBC (8-2) face unranked StFX (7-3) in the Uteck Bowl.
