The world death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed one million people.

This grim milestone comes as Canada continues to try to get control of a ballooning number of new cases.

Canada reported over 2,000 new cases of the virus on Monday.

Quebec started the week off with 750 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, with Ontario just behind at 700.

Quebec Premier Francois Legault has responded to the latest numbers by putting Montreal, Quebec City and the region south of the provincial capital on red alert level.

In these areas, bar and restaurant dining areas have been closed and gatherings in private residences are no longer permitted.

Last week, Ontario implemented new province-wide restrictions for COVID-19, including closing strip clubs and reducing opening hours for bars and restaurants.

The death toll is Canada sits at 9,278 people.
