Forks Road Bridge removed

First Published:

A large section of the Forks Road bridge in Welland was removed today. Residents watched as it floated down the Welland Canal to Port Colborne where it will be dismantled and recycled. Two other sections will be removed in the coming weeks. The city is looking at replacement options and the cost involved.

Schouten excavating is the company doing the demolition. Tug boats were brought in to pull and support the bridge as it travelled the canal.

The bridge was closed to vehicles and pedestrians late last year because it was falling apart faster than anticipated, even after emergency repairs in 2016.

The 225 foot center span has been brought to Marine Recycling Corp in Port Colborne and will now be recycled.

The city will meet next week to discuss potential options and funding for a replacement.
