Fahmy verdict delayed to August

First Published:

Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy says he’s disappointed that a verdict expected this morning in his retrial in Cairo, Egypt has now been postponed.

He says he’s had no official communication about the reason for the delay or a new date, but media reports are saying either August 2nd or 8th and that one of the judges is sick today.

Fahmy asked for clarification via his twitter account, later tweeting that the MENA official news agency is saying the verdict will be on August 2nd.

Fahmy calls the situation and the lack of an official statement “very insulting.”   The Al Jazeera English journalist and two colleagues face widely denounced terror charges and spent over a year in prison before a successful appeal of an earlier conviction spawned a retrial and release on bail in February.

Fahmy also revealed today that he has just married his fiance — making sure she will have better visitation rights if he is sent back to jail.
