An Egyptian court has sentenced Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy and two other Al-Jazeera English journalists to three years in prison. Fahmy was in court on Saturday in the latest turn in the trial that’s gained worldwide attention for questions of media freedom and human rights in Egypt. In a statement, Canada’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Lynne Yelich, says Canada is “disappointed” over the verdict, and that it “severely undermines confidence in the rule of law in Egypt”.
Fahmy’s lawyer, Amal Clooney, told reporters in Cairo that today’s verdict is a a black eye for Egypt. One of the men sentenced today, an Australian, has already been deported. In interviews he said the decision was made for political reasons. Immediately after the ruling, Fahmy’s wife, Marwa, was seen crying in court.
