Director Alex Garland brings his newest film Annihilation to the big screen this weekend. Garland reteams with Oscar Isaac in the follow-up to his critically praised debut Ex Machina. Isaac plays Kane, a soldier who is the only surviving member of an expedition into an uncharted environmental disaster zone. While Kane recovers from his life threatening injuries, his wife Lena (Natalie Portman) volunteers to go into the zone in order to discover what happened on the last expedition.
Adapted from Jeff VanderMeer’s sci-fi novel of the same name, Garland spoke to us about his adaptation process and the challenges of bringing prose to picture.
