Dundas long-term care home has numerous infractions following inspection

First Published:

Dundas residents and a local MPP Sandy Shaw are worried about the future of Blackadar Continuing Care Centre following unsanitary conditions and a winter power outage. Provincial inspections showed numerous infractions at Blackadar Continuing Care Centre and the Ministry of Long-Term Care says it has until June 30 to be in compliance.

The inspection found moldy conditions, broken infrastructure, and safety concerns. The report by the Ministry of Long-Term Care says two days before Christmas, there was a power outage in the building that lasted for more than 12 hours.

According to the report filed last month, officials say, “these conditions can potentially lead to the actual harm of residents,” and “the licensee failed to ensure that staff, volunteers, and students were trained on the emergency plans.”

The ministry says the latest inspection of the 80-bed home was in result of a filed complaint after its power generator went down from freezing conditions leaving staff and residents without the proper emergency resources.

MPP Sandy Shaw says, “this stuff has been going on at Blackadar for years, when is enough, enough with the ministry slapping them on the wrist.” Shaw says issues at the home stem as far back as 2007.

Elite Developments own the home and Extendicare operates it. They have yet to respond to questions from CHCH News about the report and its future plans for its adjacent property.

According to city hall’s agenda, its planning department is recommending the adjacent property to be removed from heritage consideration and in April 2021, a formal consultation application was submitted by the agent for the owner that proposed the existing building on the property be demolished to facilitate its redevelopment.

The City of Hamilton says its demolition application had expired and the company will have to re-apply. Blackadar Continuing Care Centre will be discussed at a committee meeting on Monday.
