It has been a rough day for a Hamilton family whose home has been partially destroyed by fire.

Firefighters were called to the Nature Crt around 8 this morning, and say the blaze started in the kitchen. Neighbours called 911 when they saw flames coming from the back of the house.

Fire crews were concerned due to the close proximity of houses. In total, 10 trucks and 30 firefighters were called in to battle the blaze.

Luckily the home owners and their two children were not home at the time; the family dog was rescued.

Andy Lopes told CHCH News: “They were saying it was a stove that was left on accidentally, and just kept getting warmer and hotter, and eventually, you know there was probably something on top of the stove that just caught up on fire.”

“And it went through the walls and it went upstairs and damaged the floor upstairs and the whole roof and the whole back wall.”

The family will be staying in a hotel for the time being, but they hope to rebuild their home. Damage is estimated at more than $300,000 dollars.
