Disqualified driver hits cop car while trying to flee Hamilton police

A 33-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly crashing into a cop car while trying to flee police in Hamilton.

It happened in the area of Barton St. East and Smith Ave. around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police were investigating a suspicious vehicle and discovered the licence plate was not registered to the car.

When officers tried to initiate a traffic stop, police say the driver struck a police cruiser and then mounted the sidewalk while attempting to flee.

The vehicle was eventually stopped and the driver was arrested. Police say the man was a disqualified driver with “several prohibitions.”

Officers searched the vehicle and found a “dagger style” knife and a “filleting” knife.

The 33-year-old man is facing a number of charges including dangerous operation motor vehicle, possession of weapons dangerous and disobey court order.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

The man’s Ford Fusion was seized and will be impounded for 45 days.
