(Update)

Delta Bingo in Hamilton, which sits in the heart of the downtown core, is shutting its doors for good on Sunday. It’s a massive building that sits at 45 King Street East.

A message online as well as this one on its window confirms the closing. The operators say the reason for the closing is so it can focus on converting its Fort Hrie and St. Catharine’s locations to electronic bingo.

Bingo goers told me this closure caught them completely off guard. They only learned of it days ago. Disappointment basically sums up how they’re feeling:

“I believe in socialbility. A place like this, you get people here, you talk. This is a social hub.”

“Even though it did get shut down, I’m surprised the city didn’t get into it because there is no other source of entertainment.”

“I’m sad. I’m sad for a lot of people especially the elderly people. They enjoying coming in here. They can put spend $10 or $15 but they other bingos they have to spend $100.”

One of the casualties of this will be the 30 some charities that Delta Bingo gives money to. They’ll have to find other ways to raise funds.

We’ve been asked a lot about what will take the bingo halls spot. And right now, we don’t know, the owners have not said anything on that front.
