Ontario Lieutenant-Governor David Onley marked his last day in office today after seven years on the job.

The 64-year old used his term to champion accessibility issues. He uses a motorized scooter, as a result of having polio as a child.

Onley spoke today about the progress that’s been made, saying he feels he’s advanced the dialogue for people with disabilities.

“I think I have helped changed the dialogue from what it was 7 years ago where it was a matter of accessibility as a yes/no proposition and how much and how fast, and now it has transitioned to seeing people with disabilities, the whole range of disabilities, as being people that are worthy of being hired.”

Elizabeth Dowdeswell will be sworn in tomorrow as the province’s 29th Lieutenant-Governor during a ceremony at Queen’s Park. She’s a long-time public servant, who has specialized in the environment.
