Damaging ice storm

Thousands of people are still powerless tonight after yesterday’s ice storm brought down trees and powerlines. The cleanup started early this morning and crews have been working throughout the day to get the lights back on.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement today warning that strong winds can blow over heavily weighted trees that are covered in ice and say falling tree limbs can cause even more power outages. At its peak more than 100 000 hydro customers were without power.

Fire ripped though a home in Flamborough early Friday morning. The family was using a generator because of the power outage when it caught fire and spread to the house. About 40 firefighters from six surrounding stations were called to the scene because of the remote location. All four people inside the home got out safely. Damage is estimated at $1.3 million.
