Court denies request for injunction against McGill University encampment

First Published:

A Quebec judge has denied a request for an injunction against an encampment built by pro-Palestinian activists on a McGill University campus.

Demonstrators have been staying in tents on campus since Saturday afternoon and the request would have legally required them to leave.

Two students asked the Quebec Superior Court to order protesters to move at least 100 metres from school buildings.

But the judge ruled they failed to demonstrate the encampment was blocking their access to the school — or that they would be unable to write their final exams.

The judge added that some aspects of the protest are troubling, but there’s no indication they constitute direct threats towards the students. The protesters said they won’t leave until the university divests from Israeli companies.

Meantime tents have gone up at the University of Ottawa where a similar protest is taking place with the same demands, and they’re calling more students to come join.
