Costs added to Randle Reef cleanup

First Published:

Hamilton City Council has voted to add another $6 million to the $14 million it’s going to spend to contain pollution in Randle Reef in Hamilton Harbour.

It follows a city report that estimates the total cost of containing the industrial pollution in the harbour at close to $140 million.

The estimated cost last year was about $105 million.

The city hopes the provincial and federal governments will increase their share.

The plan is to cap or contain more than 600,000 cubic metres of coal tar, by building a shipping pier over it.
