Last week we shared the story of a Hamilton home owner frustrated with the work that a contractor did, or didn’t do in his basement.
We spoke with contractor Christian Basnett who feels his name was dragged through the mud.
In July, Basnett was hired to waterproof and renovate a basement in east Hamilton for $16,000.
“I came up with a quote of $15,000 – $16,000 and I said I’d do as much as I could, the agreement was he would take over the project from where I got it to,” said Basnett.
The home owner, Stewart Mcgregor says that’s not the case and expected the job to be almost completed and then he would take over the mudding and painting.
Home inspector Dan Davies went through the basement and found issues with the work.
Davies feels the quote of $16,000 was extremely low and should have been north of $40,000. He says a contract should include details about the planned work, guarantees, warranties, contractors licence and proof of insurance.
Basnett says it isn’t fair to judge the current state of the basement because he didn’t finish the work and because much of the work he did do has been ripped up.
Home inspector Dan Davies says the moral of this story is, get as many quotes and references as you can before you decide on a contractor.
