Prime Minister Stephen Harper says the change to the royal succession rules is long overdue.
British Prime Minister David Cameron says the 16 Commonwealth countries of which Queen Elizabeth is monarch have agreed to remove gender discrimination in the order of succession to the throne.
New royal succession rules mean a first born daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge could now take the throne.
Cameron says they have also agreed to lift the ban on the monarch marrying a Roman Catholic.
Today’s decision scraps a 300 year old rule.
