The City of Hamilton is keeping a close eye on what it believes to be decaying algae in Hamilton Harbour.
It says the algae has been spotted in various locations between the Desjardins Canal in Dundas and the Macassa Bay Yacht Club.
City staff are currently investigating and suspect the recent increase in decaying algae is a result of high levels of nitrogen and phosphorous in the water, which can lead to rapid levels of algae growth in heat and sunlight.
Unpleasant odours and floating algae mats may be seen in these locations.
Hamilton Water has collected samples of the water and algae for microscopic investigation. Staff are waiting for the results to determine whether there are any abnormal indicators that would require further investigation.
The city has also contacted the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and stakeholders in the area such as the Royal Botanical Gardens.
