The procession for Corporal Nathan Cirillo arrived at the Markey-Dermody Funeral Home in east Hamilton just after 8pm.

Thousands of Canadians packed the overpasses on the Highway of Heroes and were 3 and 4 deep on the roads in Ottawa and in Hamilton throughout the day and evening.

Visitations are Sunday from 6 to 9pm and Monday from 9am to 9pm. These visitations are open to the public. The military funeral will take place on Tuesday.

Hamilton Police Chief Glenn de Caire said he couldn’t believe the incredible turnout for Corporal Cirillo.

Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina said that it has brought the city together. He was amazed by the rows of tow trucks, fire trucks, EMS vehicles lining the route.

Mayor Bratina also recognized Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent for his sacrifice for his country. Vincent was killed Monday when run over in Quebec

As mentioned, people not only lined the procession route in Hamilton, dozens of people — if not more — stood on the Highway 403 overpasses on Plains Road, Waterdown Road and King Road — to watch as Cirillo’s procession passed by. When the procession made its way through west Burlington, people spontaneously began singing the national anthem.

The procession began in Ottawa. And it travelled along on the Highway of Heroes from the nation’s capital Friday afternoon.

Earlier in the evening, Corporal Nathan Cirillo’s former company commander with the reserves delivered a statement on behalf of the Cirillo family. Nathan’s step-father Victor was on hand for the statement that was made outside the family home in east Hamilton.

Students and teachers at Corporal Nathan Cirillo’s son’s school in Hamilton’s east end.

Also paid their respects to the Cirillo family Friday afternoon. Cirillo leaves behind a five-year-old son, Marcus.

Students and staff at St. Eugene Catholic Elementary School wore red and white in solidarity to show respect for Marcus and his family during this difficult time.

Ida Donato, Principal at St. Eugene: “When the students came dressed in red and white for Canada, then we decided to get these big flags and have every student sign the flags by grade. We displayed them in front of the school and we all came out to sing ‘O Canada’ to show our love and support for Canada and our love and support for the Cirillo family and the armed forces.

Family members, friends, classmates, and even strangers stopped by Cirillo’s home Friday afternoon to lay flowers, cards, and Canadian flags.

An official fund has been set up for Corporal Nathan Cirillo’s son Marcus.

It is with TD Bank. The transit number is 2221. The account number is 6391935. This is the only authorized trust fund. CHCH News has received calls today with reports of bogus funds through Facebook charity pages.
