After nearly 90 years in Hamilton, the Hungarian Presbyterian Church on Birch avenue is in trouble. 2 municipal lots across the street from the church have been blocked off and the church’s congregation has nowhere to park. Their pastor says that could bring about the demise of the church.
The lots used to be municipal parking but the city was only leasing them from Hydro One. The lots weren’t making enough money so the city ended it’s lease and blocked them off.
“For us it’s life and death, if we cannot use the church and park here then we’re in trouble, all these decades we had no problem but all of a sudden we have to face this difficulty.” Pastor Paul Kantor.
Ward 3 councillor Matthew Green says he feels terrible that the congregation feels at risk. He’s working to create on-street parking on Birch avenue from Barton to Cannon, where it’s currently restricted. Hydro One is also sympathetic. They say they’d be willing to discuss a lease agreement with the church for the lots but since the church only needs it on Sundays and Tuesdays, they’re worried it will cost too much.
