A St. Catharines animal shelter is asking the public for help in covering the medical expenses required to treat an abandoned shih tzu that it says was found in “deplorable” condition.

The Humane Society of Greater Niagara says the stray was found by a concerned citizen on Christmas Eve.

He was discovered malnourished and in pain, suffering from a severe untreated skin infection, overgrown nails and impacted and infected ears.

Staff at the Humane Society have now named him ‘Gary’ and say they are trying to address his extensive medical needs and give him the love and care he deserves.

Tanya Firmage, the Executive Director of the Humane Society of Greater Niagara says that though Gary has a long road ahead of him, he is expected to make a full recovery and will be placed up for adoption.

“We are deeply saddened to receive to Gary in such a state, especially on Christmas Eve” said Firmage.

“This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for community support to ensure the well-being of animals in distress.”

Until then, the shelter is asking for donations from the public to help cover the cost of his medical bills.

Anyone with information about Gary is asked to call the Humane Society of Greater Niagara in St. Catharines at 905-682-0767.
