Second World War veteran of Hamilton-based regiment dies at 104

The last-known surviving Second World War veteran of a Hamilton-based regiment has died at the age of 104.
Honorary Lance Corporal Tony Mastromatteo served with the 1st battalion of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada in The Netherlands from mid-September to late October of 1944. He also fought in France and Belgium.
Mastromatteo was still connected to his army roots and attended parades and Remembrance Day ceremonies well past 100 years of age.
This past May, he celebrated his birthday with the ‘Argylls’ and his family and a month later he was awarded with a war medal from The Netherlands to honour Canadian soldiers who participated in the liberation of the country during the Second World War.
