OPP West investigate drive-by shooting in Haldimand County

Thorburn Street in Cayuga, Haldimand County was closed this morning for a police investigation following an early morning drive-by shooting.
OPP West Region responded to a 911 emergency call for a report of a weapons complaint shortly after 2 a.m. at a house near the Cayuga Memorial Arena.
“It was determined that unknown suspects attended the residence and discharged a firearm striking the home and vehicles that were parked in the driveway. The good news out of this, the people sleeping inside were not injured. They immediately contacted 911,” said OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk.
Haldimand County police believe the incident to be an isolated one.

The brazen act of violence has left many in the quiet residential area shocked.
“I was up around 2 o’clock last night and all I heard was a bunch of gunshots … about 10 of them. Then I heard a car speed off towards Dunnville. It rang out like bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, and then it kind of stopped. Then I heard a car kind of screech off,” said one resident.
Cayuga Ward 2 Councillor John Metcalfe went to the scene as soon as he heard about the shooting and told CHCH that he’s shocked that something like this would happen in Cayuga.
“This never happens in Cayuga, a sleepy little town. Right now people are concerned. Of course the school is just around the corner so very concerning,” Metcalfe said.
Authorities don’t have any suspect or vehicle descriptions at this time.
Investigators are asking residents in the area to check any surveillance footage and to contact the Haldimand County OPP at 888-310-1122 if they notice anything suspicious.
Thorburn Street re-opened around 1:30 p.m.
