Ontario Liberals push to sell province’s stockpiled U.S. alcohol for charity

The Ontario Liberals are pushing Premier Doug Ford’s government to sell the province’s stockpile of American alcohol that is currently sitting in storage, after it was pulled off the shelves in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

The province says there’s around $80 million worth of American booze sitting in storage which would generate around $14 million in profit.

The liberals argue that money could go towards helping local charities.

The idea of selling off American booze and using the money elsewhere has been adopted by a number of provinces already including P.E.I., Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Nova Scotia also began selling off its $14 million remaining inventory on Dec. 1, with sales going to food banks.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston reassured Nova Scotians in a statement issued last month, that the province still remains committed to a team Canada approach and they won’t be buying any new American alcohol when they run out.

Ford hasn’t ruled out the charity donation idea.

To add to this push from the Liberals party, about $2 million worth of the alcohol in storage is set to expire over the next six months.
