Brantford police say that one woman has died and three people were taken to hospital after a Monday morning house fire in the city’s north end.

Officers say they received reports of a fire around 7:45 a.m. at a townhouse on Buchanan Crescent.

Neighbours told CHCH News that they saw fire and smoke coming from a window of the townhome.

“I got back around – right around the time that the fire trucks were called. I saw fire coming out of the window and black smoke, so I ran out to see if I could help,” said Brittaney Valde, friend and neighbour of the deceased.

A 49-year-old woman was removed from the residence and taken to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

“There had been three other adults at the time who were also removed from the residence and treated at the local hospital for injuries,” said Const. Alex Guerra.

Guerra added that the Brantford Police Criminal Investigations Section is currently coordinating their investigation of the residential structure fire with the Ontario Fire Marshal.

“Police, along with the Fire Marshal’s office, need to make sure that nothing is missed. And we’ll investigate the structure fire as criminal and prove it otherwise as the investigation goes on.”

Guerra says there is no threat to public safety.
