Hamilton police and fire crews responded to a house fire this afternoon on Mons Avenue, just off Gage Avenue.

Police say that one woman has died. A neighbour who attempted to save her has reportedly been taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson for Hamilton fire said that when crews arrived at the scene, they saw heavy smoke and flames venting from the second-floor windows of a two-storey home, with flames lapping up to the attic and roof area.

While conducting search and rescue on the second floor of the home, emergency responders realized that a female residents was unaccounted for. Shortly after, firefighters found the woman dead in the home.

Officials say the fire was brought under control quickly, and no one else was home at the time. No other injuries have been reported, and the damage to the home is estimated to be around $500,000.

Investigators say the Ontario Fire Marshall has been alerted and is investigating.

More to come.
