Police are searching for multiple suspects after a mass shooting in Toronto left one person dead and another five injured.

The shooting took place in an alleyway near a series of apartment buildings in the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood of North York just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night. A resident of a nearby apartment building says he heard 10-20 shots being fired.

Officers said a man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene, while four other men and one woman were taken to a local hospital with injuries from gunshot wounds.

Emergency crews have not released information about the extent or seriousness of the injuries.

In a statement on X, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said she’s “disturbed by news of the shootings,” and was in contact with police officers involved in the investigation.

“I’m disgusted and disappointed,” said Councillor Mike Cole, who called the gun violence a “punch in the stomach” for the otherwise peaceful community.
