Hamilton firefighters were called to Prime Pizza after a fire broke out at the Concession Street East business Thursday afternoon.

The calls came in at around 1:30 p.m., reporting a structure fire at 402 Concession St. East.

When crews arrived they saw flames and smoke coming from the roof.

Once at the scene, first responders upgraded the call to a multiple alarm fire with 55 firefighters on the scene at the time.

At the time of the fire, Prime Pizza staff were inside the building and workers from a roofing company were making repairs to the roof.

Everyone was able to evacuate the area without injury.

The Hamilton Fire Department says it took around 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, but not before it caused substantial damage to the building.

Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said battling the blaze took some extra effort.

“Once crews were able to get the fire under control, we did have some effort to get the hotspots that were trapped within the roof areas,” said Cunliffe.

“We had to open up the roof to get at the fire and completely extinguish a fire in the attic space.”

Cunliffe said Hamilton Fire will remain on the scene for several hours to make sure the fire is completely out.

The damage to the building is estimated to be at around $750,000.

Cunliffe said it is suspected that the fire may have started as a result of the repairs being made on the roof.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Ministry of Health have been notified.
