Students at an east Hamilton elementary school had a guest-filled Wednesday to learn about various careers from the professionals themselves.

For 11 years, the students at the St. Luke Catholic Elementary were able to meet with police officers, veterinarians, and this year even a TV news reporter.

Students with a variety of interests met with professionals of all types, including a mechanic, a police dog service handler, and a lawyer.

CHCH News’ Kelly Botelho spoke with a few students, to find out what they dreamed of being when they grew up.

“I don’t know, maybe be a comedian or something,” said one student, who further said he was the funniest person in the class.

“I want to be a cardiologist because I love taking care of people, and I wanted to be a doctor for a long time,” said another student.

St. Luke Catholic Elementary School hosted its annual Career Day Wednesday, so that the children can learn about different jobs and what they might want to do when they are older.

“It’s for all our students,” said Michael Geoffredo, the principal of the school. “But primarily we focus on our [grade] sevens and eights as they are getting ready for high school so they are aware of the choices they can make, [and] be exposed to different careers and just see the wonderful opportunities they have.”

Botelho explained to the students about being a news reporter, and how it’s essentially all about being a good storyteller.

Many grade two students say they were really excited to hear about everyone’s jobs, and to hear about the careers they were interested in.

“I want to be a teacher, because it looks fun and I can meet new people every year,” said one student.

“I want to be an artist when I grow up, because I draw good.” said another student.

Firefighters, police officers, and veterinarians showed the kids a bit about what they do on a daily basis.

“I am a small animal veterinarian,” said Dr. Katie Gallagher, “when I was little, that’s what I wanted to be from the time I was 4 – so a lot of the kids have really good questions.”

It was hard to compete for the title of “most interesting job” when a Halton police K9 officer showed up with his police dog.

“They don’t care about me – they just want to see the dog, so fit I can make them happy we will do that,” said the Halton police officer.

After the presentations, the kids learned that no career comes easy.

“To be a lawyer, you have to go to law school and to university to argue with other people,” said a lawyer that came to Career Day, “I was born ready.”
