Inquest begins into death of 26-year-old at Hamilton jail

Hamilton’s coroner has announced an inquest will be held into the death of a 26-year-old man at Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre.

Zakery Rogers died Jan. 31, 2021 after being found without vital signs in his cell. Officials say he was resuscitated in hospital and discharged, but ultimately died at the jail.

Family members of Rogers say he struggled with mental health issues and was not given the proper support and professional help from the prison.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Rogers’ death.
