Crews continue to tackle Hamilton’s pothole problem

Nothing ruins a commute quite like hitting a surprise pothole. City of Hamilton crews have filled roughly 8,000 potholes this winter and the job isn’t over yet.

City officials say the roads begin to crack when moisture gets into the road surface and then freezes. When it thaws, the roadway begins to break. They say the added pressure of vehicles driving over the roadway accelerates the cracking.

Last year, Main St. West by McMaster was riddled with deep and damaging potholes. The main artery was eventually shut down and underwent an $1.4-million emergency ‘shave and pave.’

The city of Hamilton has the following resurfacing and repair work scheduled for the spring:
