A graduation ceremony is being held by Good Shepherd in Hamilton today to celebrate the achievements of youth and young moms who are graduating from high school.

Eighteen students in Good Shepherd’s educational program – seven from Notre Dame House School and 11 from the Jeanne Scott Parent & Child Resource Centre – have earned their high school diplomas.

The ceremony, followed by a celebratory lunch, is taking place at St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish at 125 Picton Street East at 11 a.m.

“These young people are taking control of their future through education. Their successes are breaking down life’s barriers,” says Brother Richard MacPhee, chief executive officer of Good Shepherd.

“They are showing us that commitment and determination can help to build a better, more resilient community when we invest in youth,” adds Brother MacPhee.

Classes at Notre Dame House School on James Street North and the Jeanne Scott Parent & Child Resource Centre on Barton Street East are conducted by the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic School Board, in partnership with Good Shepherd.

Notre Dame House School is located a block away from Notre Dame House, Good Shepherd’s co-ed emergency shelter for homeless and street-involved youth.

At the Jeanne Scott Parent & Child Resource Centre young mothers can work toward their high school diploma while their babies are cared for on the premises. The Centre is next door to Regina’s Place, a transitional housing program for young parents and their children.
