Halton cop dragged by vehicle during botched car theft

A car thief allegedly dragged a Halton cop nearly 50 meters while driving a stolen vehicle in a last-ditch attempt to avoid being arrested.
Police say the officer only suffered minor injuries during the incident, and the driver remains at large.
The initial call came in around 3:15 a.m. on Feb. 21.
At the time, several officers were sent to a residence near Woodward Avenue and Thompson Road North in Milton, after multiple people had allegedly attempted to steal a 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

When police arrived, several people fled on foot.
Authorities were able to locate a suspect vehicle and attempted to make an arrest.
The driver decided to flee, which resulted in an officer being dragged for nearly 50 meters before they fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries, police say.
The driver is still at large, but officers were able to catch up with another suspect who had fled a short while later and take him into custody.
Authorities say that 23-year-old Takiyoudine Oumerzouk from Montreal was taken into custody and charged with theft of a motor vehicle and obstructing a peace officer.
At the time of his arrest, Oumerzouk was on a previous release order and was under conditions not to leave Quebec. He was charged with breaking that too.
Currently, he remains in police custody and is awaiting a bail hearing at a Milton court.
