Welland landfill fire contained

Welland Fire officials say a fire at Humberston Landfill has been contained as fire crews face continue to face challenges from burning wood.
The City of Port Colborne issued a statement earlier today warning residents to keep windows and doors closed.
Acting Fire Chief Matt Richardson says they are monitoring the situation and smoke resonating from the site not hazardous smoke
Fire crews were called Monday to a report of skids on fire at the Welland Humberston Landfill site at 700 Humberstone Rd in Welland just after 6 p.m.
Crews arrived to find a massive pile of engulfed skids and requested additional manpower to the scene.
Water supply was not available at the rural site of the fire and tankers were needed to shuttle water to the scene.

Tankers were requested from Welland, Pelham, Port Colborne, Niagara Falls, Wainfleet and Fort Erie.
Richardson says crews do have a handle on the fire as excavators pull away piles of wood though flare-ups are expected.
Police say no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire or whether its suspicious in nature has also not been determined.
The Niagara Regional Police Service has one officer blocking traffic at Prince Charles Dr. and Humberstone Rd. in Welland.
Police say Welland Fire expects the blaze may take several days to extinguish.
